Default MOSQUITOES in Alaska

According to an article in the May 29 issue of the Anchorage News, it is time to take action on protecting your self and family members from getting bitten by mosquitoes. According to the article the mosquitoes season is in full bloom because of the wet spring throughout Alaska. We have cruised Alaska ever since 1972 and flound that these pests prevail in the lower Panhandle just as well as the north.

The CDC(Center for Disease) Control has recommende a spray, "DEET" that can be purchased in Alaska in most hardware stores or drug stores. It comes in a canister small enough to fit in a pocketbook.

DEET is the active ingredient in most effective mosquito repellants so can be purchased in any drug store. However: LADIES with nail polish beware: It softens and eventually "dissolves" it!

Hi, this is HannaS77 once again, hopefully the last time on the subject. I came across an article by the CDC, "Protection against Mosquitoes and Other Arthropods" that can be downloaded.

http//www.cdc.gov/travel/bugs.htm

There are important precautions to take using DEET or any other replellant the has DEET as a chemical. One of importanace is not to use the spray in a confined area nor breathe the spray.

Another Precaution: Ladies, DEET softens and slowly dissolves nail polish!

MOST Alaska cruisers- don't go to the "bug" areas. Meaning bush interior. They aren't nearly so bad inside passage ports, but rethink Wonder Lake- significant bug problems.
