Default Mosquitos?

Several places I have read that the mosquito is the state bird of Alaska.

But I haven't read many messages in these forums referring to them.

Should we be taking repellant with us? How bad are the mosquitos? And in September?????

Thanks.

Hi Betty,
We were up there the last week in Aug., first week in Sept. and didn't find mosquitos a problem, but I always pack repellant just in case.

Thank you, Donna.

We'll be sure to take repellant with us, hoping we don't need to use it.

We were just in Alaska and only had a problem with the Mosquitos in one place. Like Donna said, it's good to have the repellant with you especially if you are doing any inland tours or hiking.

Mosquitos are more prevalent inland than near the coast. If you are going to be doing some inland excursions it would be a good idea to take a small bottle of insect repellent that contains at least 30% Deet. This should be adequate for your cruise and any activities you have planned. Don't mess with the Skin So Soft, Ugly Bugly or garlic. They don't work or don't work well with a high concentration of mosquitos. This has been proven in multiple blind studies. However, use Deet sparingly on small children and never on children under two years of age.

Take care,
Mike
