Default Just Booked Alask - May '05

HAL finally posted their Alaska '05 iteneraries.

We booked an Inside Passage Vancouver to Vancouver on the Zaandam, with stops in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

Would appreciate any past PAX experiences on the ship.

Also, we want to do a Helicopter landing on a Glacier (thanks to Karen16 for all the reviews), the White Pass Railway in Skagway, some fishing (just for the Halibut), and possibly the "Best of Juneau" excursion.

We would like to book independent where feasible.

Thanks for your replies and recommendations.

We sailed Zaandam a couple of years ago on the Alaska trip. We loved the ship. She's comfortable with much art work and nice decorations. Service was wonderful as well. The ship is not glitzy at all.

I'm sure you'll be happy with her.

I've found that the "best" of any of the towns on the stop is just to walk around and soak in the atmosphere. All 3 bergs are easy walks from the docks, especially if you don't tender.

For $10 round trip in Juneau you can take the local bus from the pier and back to the Mendenhall glacier which is beautiful.

Whale watching in Juneau was terrific as well. We used Orca (Captain Larry) and they did a great job.

We loved the White Pass train in Skagway.

The Duck tour in Ketchikan was goofy and silly and a lot of fun. And you see a decent part of the town as well.

But again, there's plenty to see in the ports by just walking around. In Skagway, walk over to Creek Street, take the funicular up to the hotel at the top of the hill, and walk back down the husbands trail. Very nice and many views too.

If you have any specific questions on the Zaandam feel free to send a direct note to my Email and I'll help if possible.

Creek St. is in Ketchikan. The trail is the "Married Man's trail. "

Verify what and where the fishing is best in May- halibut requires more planning.

Thanks for the replies.

Karen 16:

Just received an email from Northern Lights Charters in Ketchikan regarding Halibut fishing in May.

Said that a half-day was do-able in May. Have you had any experience with them?

My family has gone many times with Northern Lights. A top tour operator.

Thanks Karen16, that's good enough for me.

Our itenerary includes a 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM stop in Skagway.

We definitely want to do the White Pass Railway while there.

If we catch the early train, will we have time to do a Helicopter Glacier Landing that same day?

Also, our time in Juneau is from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM. We definitely want to do a whale watch. Who would you recommend for this stop?

Thanks,

Sam

Plenty of time to do both in Skagway.

What is your preferred excursion for a Helicopter Glacier Landing and with which operator?

Thanks for your reply.

Only one operator in Skagway- TEMSCO, if your budget allows, the double glacier landing- BUT only if you don't have to give up something else to go. In Alaska it's important for varied touring in my opinion.
