Is it possible to drive from Whittier to Homer? Our cruise lands in Whittier and instead of going to Anchorage and leaving from there - it looks like Whittier is closer. Also does anyone know where I can find a good driving map for that area?
Yes- you will need a one way car rental with Avis- with a hefty drop off charge- but with limited time- it is the best option. Allow at least 2 overnights in Homer. Necessary for driving Alaska - get a copy of THE MILEPOST, very detailed road information but easy to Homer- out of the tunnel, continue to Seward Highway- turn left, turn right at the Sterling Highway- to end.
It takes about 3 to 4 hours to get down to Homer. But it is worth the trip. Mileposts is definately a good help. You have got to try the Frosty Bear for ice cream down on the Spit. Email me if you need any more info. we were there for 3 days in June. Found a great bed and breakfest called Crane's Crest in Homer that overlooked the town. The view was incredible to say the least. Watch for moose and bald eagles on your trip down. We also saw a grizzly enjoying a snack off on the side of the road.
