You are too late out of Ketchikan for any certainty. I believe the dump in Juneau is now closed to "tourists"? I've seen bears (blacks) around Mendenhall a couple times that time frame but only brief sporatic viewing.

Dick, I hope this isn't too late... but I just disembarked from the Statendam Southbound. When I was in Ketchikan on Friday, I went on the Neets Bay Flightseeing and Bear Viewing Excursion and there were bears. We had some really "close encounters" with them. They have cancelled Traitors Cove due to lack of rain and water in the stream there. No water means no spawning salmon and no bears. Neets was still good, though. Had a marvelous time!

We just got back (9/8/04) from our Alaska cruise and I went with Michele of Island Wings to Traitors Cove and there was plenty of water in the stream and we saw one bear catch salmon. The bear then decided to come up on the road and look us over while we were on the bridge. A little too close of an encounter. Especially since we had to return on the road the bear just took.
