I'M ON CARNIVAL SPIRIT NEXT WEEK, I HAVE SEEN THAT SOME PEOPLE TAKE AN EXTENDED TRIP UP WHITE PASS TRAIN THEN ON TO YUKON. OUR CRUISE SHIP DOES NOT OFFER THIS, ANY SUGGESTIONS HOW TO FIND THIS KIND OF TOUR?
Rent a car if possible in Skagway (close by pier) and drive from Skagway to Carcross with breathtaking stops along the way - follows pretty much what appears to be the route the train takes....we did it while there in May on Summit Repo and absolutely loved it! We went as far as Emerald Lake then turned around and returned. Driving was so easy and being free to stop along the way at will was wonderful. About 75 miles each way and well worth the $70 car rental fee.
Only one road- the Klondike Highway. As mentioned rent a car if you have a long port day or don't want to take the train. You can easily get to Emerald Lake in a 4 hour window- it is necessary to allow plenty of time for stops. 150 miles round trip. If you you have all day- take the first train in the am and leave a block of time in the pm. RESERVE now cars are in short supply, only major is Avis, 2 independents - Sourdough, and PB Cruisers.
