Family of four with two young boys (11 & 7) would like to go on a combo helicopter/dog sledding tour on a glacier. Which port would be the best between Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Seward. Also, best company in that port would be appreciated.
Also, kid's would like to pan for gold. any advice?
Glacier dog sledding is the most canceled of all Alaska tours, if going northbound- Seward would likely have the option for booking a few days ahead, neither Juneau or Skagway likely will. Juneau is the most canceled- 2 companies, ERA who is ship contracted and Coastal who uses Godwin's dogs out of Seward. Skagway is booked with TEMSCO. Always have back up plans anyway- just in case, sometimes a glacier helicopter landing can be an option- think if this is something for you ?? as you won't have a lot of time to decide. All gold panning is fake. ship tours will run $40pp a very costly option in my opinion . In the past - at the docks there used to be bus tours out of Skagway for panning. Also a set up on Broadway- in town, a few blocks down. In Juneau the Last Chance Mining Museum is good, a long walk from the dock or a short cab ride, the Juneau Douglas City museum has a gold mining exhibit as well.
