Default Sitka Nat'l Historical Park

We have decided that for our Sitka port time we will be on a self-tour. I see that the Sitka Nat'l Historical Park has a $4 admission and walking trails and the Alaska Raptor Center. I have learned that the park is at the south end of Lincoln street and approximately 1/4 mile from downtown. How far is the park from where we actually dock? Is walking to the park a safe and/or desirable option? Is there a bus that we can catch on our own at the dock to take us there?

Yes very walkable without mobility limitations. A major reason however, to go to the Sitka Heritage Park is for the 1 mile loop trail past the totems and fort site. Purchase the cheap guidebook, really enhances the walk. Then from there the Raptor is uphill a 10 min. walk. There is an all day shuttle $7 last year, that also goes to these locations. Be sure to also request the Sitka visitor guide. The dock is "downtown". This is a tender port.

For clairfication- safe- is a true word in Alaska, on the Inside Passage ports, completely safe.

You can easily walk the whole length of Lincoln, seeing Castle Hill, the Church, Bishop's House, Sheldon Jackson Museum & the park (in that order). I'm a middle-aged couch potato & I had no trouble with it at all. Sitka is in a beautiful natural setting - really a great stop for the cruise ships.
