I am planning to go to Alaska this June and am trying to decide if I should just go to the Yukon through a local tour group rather than the ship, or do the ship tour of the white pass and the Yukon. Would I be missing out if I did not do the white pass rail?
I looked at that trip. Our tour book says it is 8 hours. UGH to much time for me on a train.
So instead we are going on a jeep adventure. Only 5 hours for off road fun to Pitchfork Fall, Moore Bridge, Dead horse gulch and Carcross.140 miles This sounds to me like more fun. Maybe you like trains, I don't
We booked a car through Avis and are driving so that we can stop when we want to to survey the landscape. I've heard on the train there are no stops and your pictures aren't great because you are shooting through glass on a moving train.
The road to Carcross is a paves road, nothingscary about it.
May I suggest that your best bet maybe a van tour. The van's go up the other side of the pass. So you will be seeing the view from a different angle. They will make frequent picture stops and because they are locals they know the best spots. I personally am fond of Frontier Excursions. http://www.frontierexcursions.com/. They offer a number of trips into the Yukon of varying lengths.
As for Emerald Lake. It is true it is beautiful. But it is not a destination like for instance Niagra Falls. You go, you see you turn back around. What it is, is the northern end of the highly scenic highway. So please don't think in terms of will I really, really misss something if I don't see Emerald Lake. Think of it as you eally will have missed something if you don't see at least part of the Yukon.
