Default what kind of binoculars?

What kind of binoculars do you get? I don't want to invest a great amount since I may never use them again (thinking ebay) but want to have a good pair for our alaska cruise in September. I know there are different strengths, etc but I have NO idea what to get. Anyone can give me clues? Thanks

We purchased 10x50 Nikon binoculars after doing research and trying out different types in various sporting goods stores. I believe the cost was about $70.00. We're cruising on the Diamond in September. It will be our first time to Alaska and we can hardly wait!

lots to choose from on ebay and it looks like the bidding is fairly competitive at the last minute. Knowing nothing I also bought two pair recently and after checking model numbers on the internet, found I saved about 65% going on ebay.

The first number is the power and the second number is the size of the aperature (big front lens').

The more important number is the aperature. The bigger the aperature the more light and the more light the sharper and clearer the image is. And also, and I'm no optical specialist, if you compare a 25 vs a 50 aperature the 50 doesn't gather twice the light, it gathers 4 times the light as a 25 would.

Now about the power. 7 is fine, 10 is better but over 10 and you're starting to get into an area where you'd need a tripod. Remember that not only is the subject your viewing magnified 10 times....so is every shake and movement you or the ship make while holding the binoculars.

I actually used 7 x 35's on our Alaskan cruise and was happy with the results. These are pretty light and compact.
7 x 50 is probably the most popular size and of course better than the 7 x 35's (remember, more light). But they're also bulkier and heavier but still managable.
10 x 50's are more available these days. About the same size as the 7 x 50 but a bit heavier.

20 x 50? DalTX, are these zoom? Definitely need a tripod with 20x. Much too powerful to not have massive shaking. You can see the rings of Saturn with 20x optics.

Don't bust the bank buying binocs. You can get a decent set of Bushnell's or Tasco's at Target or Wallmart for $30.
