Default driving time/Whittier to Healy?

Hi Folks, we will be renting a car in Whittier and driving up to the Denali/Healy area. Can anyone estimate for me how long that should take? We're trying to decide whether to do it in one day, or stop somewhere for the night along the way. Thank you SO MUCH! JulieG

Better to break the calculations up into 2 sets: From Whittier to Anchorage is 1.5+ hours and things really depend on how long you need to wait for the 1-way tunnel to be going in your direction. This is a really pretty drive with lots of potential for turning out. From Anchorage to Denali entrance area is about 5.5+ hours without stops and along the way there is a good amount to see and do. Its hard to say when you'd arrive in Denali even if you went straight because its a bit unpredictable as to when you will be able to disembark. If you have the time, I'd break it up into 2 days and get some exploring in.

If you do do it in one day, at the very least have the return with an overnight in Talkeetna and the ability to spend a lot of time. Necessary= get a copy of THE MILEPOST. and determine what your interests are and areas you wish to stop. Be aware your last opportunity for grocery shopping is Wasilla. I picked up a couple packs of bakery muffins from Safeway and they sure were tasty on the Shuttle bus, nice crunch free packaging too.

Thanks so much to both of you! We do have to hustle in one day to get to lodging which was available only certain days. Things are already getting booked up! But we plan to move much more leisurely on our return, with an overnight in Talkeetna. Thanks again, JulieG
