I'm currently planning my itinerary for an Alaska cruise in July . In the various postings from readers I've come across mention of Emerald Lake but try as I might I could not locate it on any map or atlas I looked at. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction and also, in your opinion, is it worth driving to?
For clairfication- Emerald Lake is in the Yukon. If you are a Ca citizen you aren't allowed to take rental cars from the US into Ca. Easy and very nice scenic drive. Print out the log as mentioned above.
I've attached a photo of Emerald Lake we took on our last Alaska Summit Repo cruise - last May.....it's just that beautiful....
Also, the drive is great way to see many of the beautiful sights - but at your own pace. I'd sure recommend renting a car for the day in Skagway and making this easy drive. But be sure to get Murray's milepost printout as recommended above!
Karen, thanks for the warning. We are Canadian citiizens and have just rented a car for Skagway. We were not aware that we would not be able to cross into Canada. I guess we would only be able to drive to the summit and then would have to turn around. Would this be worth it? I am going to call Avis to clarify.
NO it is not worth the rental if you can only go 20 miles. Cancel the car. Look at Frontier tours if you want to see the Yukon. they do a good job with frequent stops and commentary. Otherwise consider the train, superior for scenery, history and engineering.
We're Canadian also and the only way we can drive our rental through to Emerald Lake is if an American is the driver. Is there any American out there who will be on the Celebrity Summit for the July 15th northbound trip and would like to join two friendly Canadian couples?
