We are two Canadian couples who will be taking the Celebrity Summit July 15 to Alaska. In Skagway we had planned to rent a car and take the drive to Emerald Lake. However, due to the fact that we are Canadian and the concern of us crossing the border into the Yukon and perhaps stealing the rental car...lol we can't take this trip. However, if we are able to find an American who wants to join us and drive the vehicle across the border, that's okay. Any Americans out there who might want to join four friendly Canadians?
We just got back from doing this trip and it is beautiful so you Americans take them up on this. BEWARE watch for bear crossings we came upon one and had to stop and let him cross got great photos. This is a lovely drive and you will no regret it.
Most definitely watch for unexpected bear crossings! My parents/grandparents decided to go on back to the ship after Emerald Lake with no more stops... while we came behind. They pulled over to watch a mother bear and THREE CUBS cross the road and go over the hill. Of course we didn't see the bears since we were way behind - but my parents/grandparents certainly got a thrill out of the sighting!
However, the bears are heading to higher ground now and there won't be much if any viewing from the Klondike Highway. The big sightings run only until about mid June with May having plenty of sightings. Usually, Nothing July, August, Sept in this area.
We too are Canadian and were disappointed that we could not rent a car to drive out to Emerald Lake. I booked Yukon Discoverery with Frontier. I booked thru Orca Enterprises (1-888-733-6722). The young man who drove us was Matt. He was great! We made as many stops as we wanted, Carross Desert, Emerald Lake, stopped at the town Carross. The day we went no one else was booked so we had a private tour! Matt even stopped at his favourite coffee shop, we really wanted a Tim's but the closest Tim Hortins is in Whitehorse! Coffee on the Spirit is bad! This was a 6 hr. tour and includes lunch. We had agreat time. kp.
