Traveling Radiance 7 days beginning July 30. We stop at Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. This is probably a silly questions, but does anyone know of a area at any of these ports that we could view the salmon swimming/spawning without it being part of tour major tour? Thanks for suggestions. One other question. We'll be finished with a tour in Skagway around 6:00 PM and the ship is scheduled to leave at 9:00 PM. Will the stores be open after 6 to do some sourvenir buying? Thanks in advance to those who have suggestions/advice.
Plenty of places to see salmon, if your ship is on the RR dock in Skagway, you will pass by a salmon stream and Ketchikan- just go to Creek St. If you keep walking up Park, there is also a fish ladder. And in Juneau, if you wish, just take the city bus- pick up on Franklin about a block and across from the Red Dog- there is a shelter. And get off at the fish hatchery, huge great viewing fish ladder. Short cheap tour available as well. Verify the return bus schedule.
Yes stores are open late.
At the far end of the parking lot at the Mendenhall Glacier there is a wooden deck which I think is actually for bear viewing. There should be salmon spawning there. Once however the water level was low and a beaver dam was blocking the salmon from getting to that area but a ranger told me that they were in a drought and this area usually did have salmon.
By the way.....it really smells from the dead fish! ; ^ )
I'm on the Radiance too on July 30. This is my 4th cruise to Alaska. Here's a tip. In Ketchikan walk about 10 minutes towards the Creek Street area. You will see lots of Salmon returning. There is a small creek and several fish ladders near by. You can follow them upsteam and watch them. There is a hatchery nearby too you can walk to.
