We went on the May 27 cruise with Celebrity. The cruise was cut by one day due to mechanical problems and Ketchikan was omitted. We had already booked a floatplane tour with Carlin Air to Misty Fjords. Carlin Air was great. They knew about the problem with the ship(Summit) before we did and they called us at home before we left to inform us. That's service. They also credited our account that day for our deposit. We know who we are booking with next time. First day Seward- we did the Sealife Center (not enough time for Kenai Fjords) It is very educational and the puffin exibit is very well displayed. It is a little expensive though. In Juneau it was Orca Enterprises with capt. Larry and Coastal Helicopters landing on a glacier. We seen several humpback whales- one with Mendenhall Glacier as a back drop. Great photo op. Highlight was a pod of orcas 12 in all. They were 4 on each side of boat and 4 behind the boat. Unbelievable sight-for over 40 minutes. Landing on a glacier was my wife's favorite. Huge mountains( mountains goats climbing on one side) on both sides standing on 500 feet of ice with waterfalls and glacial streams- was like a dream. Looking down 30 to 60 feet into the glacial blue cracks is an unforgettable sight. We tasted the water from a glacial stream very cold and refreshing. We debated as to whether we could afford these sidetrips. They made the trip -you can not afford to miss this in Juneau. WE also took the tram in Juneau and took a 2 hour hike. If you have the time it is a great view - well worth it. In Skagway we rented a car drove to Emerald Lake. Fantastic moutain scenery. Watched a black bear eat dandelions for 20 minutes. It was only 60 feet from the car. We continued our drive to Whitehourse not as pretty but how often are you going to be in the capitol of the Yukon? Many many thanks to this message board. We would have never did these things without you. A special thank you to Karen. You made our trip. P. S. We are not entirely happy with the way Celebrity handled this situation, but the did give us 25 % off another cruise. We are going back north to Alaska next June 25 2006. A new port Sitka and yes Ketchikan - floatplane with Carlin Air.
We had a fantastic trip. Most of the ideas came from you Karen. We are rather new to cruising and never thought of booking shore excursions through anybody other than the ship, but you opened our eyes. We have done the interior part of Alaska on our own several years ago, driving more than 2000 miles - Danali, Fairbanks, Valdez, Seward and many others. The wildlife was great.
