Default best port to depart from 4 Alaska

I want to cruise Alaska next year and spend a few days before or after in port. Do you reccomend crusing out of Seattle,Vancouver or going on one that starts in in Whittier and ends in Vancouver or vice versa? Which ports would have lowest prices on airfare? Im flying out of Chicago. How are the sites in these cities?

Unless you are investing time in interior Alaska, flying in/out of Anchorage would probably be your most costly flight option. Myself I would never just do the cruise on this route- always taking advantage of being interior with at least another added week. I give a BIG edge to Seward - but again for the excellent activites there. If you don't plan on any and just pass through then it doesn't matter.

I greatly prefer round trip Vancouver vs round trip Seattle for the routing of more Inside Passage sailing. Princess and HAL especially do way more outside passage compared to my preferences. But you would need to transfer to Vancouver perhaps, since Seattle flights can be significantly cheaper than Vancover. Easy to do, but added costs.

I've heard there is a train you can take between Seattle and Vancouver. Do you know what it's called or how much the fare is? Also how long of a drive is it?

Amtrak, it's about 4 hours, very scenic ride, fairly cheap?? But also factor in cab fares, from Seatac about $25 and to the docks another $10. Allow 4 hours for a drive too.
