Default Sitka v. Skagway

We are booked on Infinity next July. It goes to Sitka. Would you reccommend changing to Serenade of the Seas so we can go to Skagway or is Sitka fine? It seems not as many ships go to Sitka so I'm just concerned it's not a great port...

Sitka is a fine port. The excursions offered are not as many as Skagway. Sitka is a larger town than Skagway, but more excursions are offered in Skagway.

Since you are doing a 7 day cruise there is not enough time for Skagway looking at the itinerary. To bad you are not going to both towns, each offers a lot.

In Sitka you can do some of the items on your own as Michaels Cathedral, Rapture Center. The Russian tour is interesting.
You can purchase an all day bus pass in Sitka that will take you to predetermined stops. Saves on a lot of walking. They are small busses and if you get a driver that is talkative will give you some insight on what to do.
Sitka is a tendered port, no real problems but thought you should know.

Skagway highlight to many is the White Pass Railway, fun and great views.

Celebrity Summit in July 2006 goes to both cities, the draw back is that it is a one way cruise. Vancouver to Seward or reverse. Airfare might be a consideration.

We booked the Alaska cruise in Sept 2006, it is a 14 day leaving Vancouver to Alaska then down the west coast to Los Angeles. Have done this before in May and September on prior cruises.

Thanks for the input. We looked at doing a longer cruise but just couldn't stretch the dollar that far. We have free airfare into Seattle so that is why we chose the Vancouver round trip instead of one way.

Happy sailing!

One thing about Alaska, all ports are worthwhile. So if this cruise fits your other priorities, visiting Sitka is definately a great day. Request their visitor guide- www.sitka.org

We were on the Infinity in June and we got to go to both ports. We loved Sitka. What a wonderful "quaint" town. We enjoyed it more than Skagway and we just did our own thing in Sitka. We did the train in Skagway, which was great, but loved the small town charm of Sitka.

Default Sitka/Skagway

(Hi Steve! )

We've done 2 Alaska repos out of San Diego and on the last we booked a rental car in Skagway (as the year before we were underimpressed with this port stop).....what a difference. For $65 we were able to drive up to Carcross and on to Emerald Lake - stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery - a day we'll never forget. While Sitka was lovely - I'd prefer an iteinerary that stops in Skagway for sure......but that's just me

Skagway is the only Alaska port to which I would never return. Sitka is far more interesting I.M.H.O.

We agree with the others that Sitka is the best of the two...Although we loved the Whitepass RR trip, it shoud be noted that it is only GREAT if the weather is superb! (very clear!!!!). Sitka is a delightful and very historical town....(I am a U.S. History teacher!). It is fabulous! The Raptor center, The hill where the U.S took possesion of Alaska, etc. It is just very cool.......even though you have to tender in. Well worth it!!!!
