Help? I read some ways back on board about the bus vs shuttle to area where you could see Mendenhall Glacier. It appeared that some had a certain time to pick you up after they dropped you off. That you had to keep up with the bus number and not be late. Can anyone tell me how long you get to stay at dropoff point and do you have enough time to walk to the falls? Also which is best to use, shuttle or bus?
There are bus TOURS and bus SHUTTLES to Mendenhall. The tour has a fixed time of about 30-45 mins. at the glacier. The shuttles run about every 1/2 hour and you get on any open bus at the time you wish.
On the above, most ship tours do have a little longer at the glacier.
If you want to walk to the falls, understand it's not a fixed trail. You walk along the lake and can encounter wet spots. It only takes about 15-20 mins. depending on the conditions.
I did book this excursion with the ship. We were on the Carnival Spirit. My family really enjoyed this excursion, and we had twin 12 yr. old daughters. The food at the salmon bake was very good, even the girls enjoyed it. We were not rushed at all on this excursion. We had a large bus that picked us up at the ship and dropped us off there.
Price out your options perhaps, the shuttle to Mendenhall is $10pp and Gold Creek salmon bake runs a loop bus from the docks for about $30pp then just leave when you want. For a superior salmon bake consider the Thane Ore resturant, they will pick up at the dock.
I did this tour through HAL Zaandam. We had about 45 minutes at the glacier I would say. We went off and did the walk to the falls - and it is quite a rugged trail - but well worth it! Leave yourself time to get back because it's fun to walk it and you're excited to get to the falls, then you turn around and go hey, that visitor center sure looks far away... I would say it took us a solid fifteen minutes to walk it. Then we waited twenty for the bus to arrive since it was late!
A beautiful place - i recommend the off-the-beaten-trail walk!
We did the tour (Mendenhall Glacier/rain forest) on NCL's Star. Simply put, there was not enough time to see anything: You get off the bus, get herded into the main building, see a movie, get herded back on the bus. We were there less than an hour.
In retrospect, we wish we'd taken a cab or shuttle to Mendenhall Glacier.
