Default For Karen

Do you happen to know of a place where you can pan for gold that is not on am tour? My girls would like to do this for a longer period of time than what is allowed for on a tour. We will be going next July. We have gone on the northbound cruise, now we are going southbound..(just an easier flight)

Are you going interior Alaska???? Fairbanks has gold panning. Juneau and Skagway also have "tourist" panning. Seeded. Skagway in the past has had a "pail " set up right on Broadway. Liarsville can be gotten to independently.

If going interior right on the Arm is http://www.indianvalleymine.com/mine_history.html

You seem to be the Alaska expert soooooo, some advice please. We are doing the inside passage of the Radiance in 4 weeks. These are the excursions we want to do. Do you recommend we book excursions thru the ship or on our own. We definately don't want to be late back to the ship!!!!!

12pm to 9pm-Juneau - Mendenhall Glacier & Salmon Bake - $68/pp
I saw where you suggest earlier to take the shuttle for $10/pp and then go to the Gold Creek salmon bake or to Thane Ore for the same...will we have time to do this on our own? Will there be a long line for the shuttle to MG?

6:30am to 7:30pm-Skagway - White Pass Scenic Railway - $99/pp
Can we do this on our own? Will there be a long line if we do and how far from the ship is this? Should we do this in the afternoon incase there is morning fog?

1pm-8pm-Ketchikan - Duck tour - $35/pp
Again, can we do this on our own for less? Is it worth doing? What about the UnderSea Tour for $49/pp?

We normally do excursions thru the ship when in a foreign place (DH insists) but since it's still US I'm not as worried.

Thanks for your help.

In Sept you have the potential for very iffy weather, so in Juneau I would suggest Thane Ore rather than Gold creek which is outside. And yes you have plenty of time to take the glacier shuttle to Mendenhall, return to town and call Thane Ore- I would make the reservation and pick up when you get there though.

The White Pass RR can be direct booked for about $10 savings, the difference will be the boarding area. Ship booked board at the ship, independent board at the depot, MAKES no difference since hopefully you will go into town anyway??? there is NO guarantee on fog and it can happen any time of day- big myth that it is am only. So book when it fits your schedule best.

http://www.akduck.com/home/ same price as ship purchased. Enjoyed by most.

If booking independent, have all your reservations in place before you go.
