We are cruising to Alaska next may on the Princess Diamond. We want to take a Glacier/ dog sled tour. Does anyone have any advise. I would like to do a helicopter, my hubby isn't to wild about it though. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Miss Honey
Hi person with same name...ha ha. I just got back from Alaska and we did the helicopter glacier tour which actually lands on a glacier. I liked the Coastal company rather than Temesco as they were smaller and more personal. They are also the only ones that fly year round for government contracts. Note that it was pouring rain in Juneau but at the helicopter pad (about 10 minute drive) it was cloudy but no rain. At the glacier landing itself, it was sunny and bright...that's Alaska for you. Our dinner mates did the dog sledding which is on wheels in the summer months. They said they were only on the sled for 20 minutes and felt rushed afterwards and didn't feel that they had enough time to pet the dogs. Also note that they said it was very very muddy...shoes got ruined so better prepare for this as the tour company does not offer footwear.
Did you also fly with TEMSCO??? If not, then I question your comparism? I have flown with Coastal, ERA and TEMSCO and all were well run long established companies. ERA is more impersonal due to it's size and use of seasonal pilots. But TEMSCO and Coastal are excellent choices for helicopter flights in Alaska.
Be aware glacier dog sledding is the most canceled of all Alaska tours, so always have back up plans. TEMSCO and Coastal are the only independents that allow direct booking. www.temscoair.comwww.coastalhelicopters.com
we took the city bus to the closest place you could get to mendenhal glacier (1.25) and walked 2 1/2 miles to the glacier ( we ate desserts on the ship) and took the $5 bus back.we saw the glacier had a fabuylous walk. it's so great up there
