Default Skagway: panning for gold?

While in Skagway in July we've booked the heli/dogsledding tour through Temsco and should be done by 1:30pm. We're in port until 9pm.

We're looking for something else to do since we're not big into shopping, and my boys (11 and 13) really enjoy panning for gold...tried it once in N Carolina and it was a blast!

Anyway, the ship offers a couple gold panning tours into 'Liarsville' which includes a lot of fluff that we're not really interested in...that, and the times conflict w/our heli tour.

It sounds like it's a pretty good distance from port....what would be the best way to get there and take part?

Anybody ever gone there? Is it worth the trip? Any other Skagway suggestions?

Thanks!

Liarsville, is campy and totally fake. It is at mile 3 on the Klondike Highway, so 3 miles out of town. They have a decent salmon bake.

There usually is a sluce set up run by a business on Broadway that has gold panning. Also some options in Juneau, if you have time there?

Only in Juneau from 2:30-10:30 and already have Captain Larry setup from 3:30-7pm...so not too much time available there...is it easily accessible?

When you say 'totally fake' you mean it's all a setup? Not a real gem mine?

We're looking for the real thing...where there's all kinds of cool rocks (quartz, pyrite, etc) to be found as well.

We've got a couple extra hours in Ketchikan but have a full day in Skagway (7am-9pm) and only the one tour booked.
