Default Holland or Princess?

Hello, My husband and I are planning on booking an August cruise to Alaska.

We are choosing between Holland(oosterdam, zaandam, or westerdam) and Princess (dawn or sun). Both would be a balcony room. The price is basically the same so we really are making the decision based on the vessel and cruise line. Our travel agent said that Holland caters to a "much older" crowd. We are 28 and 30 and don't want to be the youngest on board.
Any help would be great!

I should add that we have sailed on Carnival Valor (loved it!) and so this is the only thing we have to compare to.

We have cruised to Alaska four times on both Princess and Holland America and will be cruising there again in June 2006 (on Princess). Overall we have cruised Holland America 5 times and Princess 19 times, therfore I think you would enjoy Princess more. HA is not a bunch of old people, I think it is more a large group of return passengers who have happened to have been cruising for a longer period of time. Both HA and Princess have great programs for children and families that we have used with our two grandaughters. Princess ships tend to be a little larger and I think this creates more activities on board. Whichever line you choose you will certainly enjoy your cruise.

Actually age groups on all Alaska sailings are similar, with middle aged and above the majority, including Carnival. There also are on average far fewer of the "fill" activities of the Caribbean as what is outside the ship the highlight.

So determine what your priority is for going there perhaps?? Your routing choice is the poorest for sailing Alaska in my opinion. Round trip Vancouver is way superior especially with HAL's double glacier sailings that include Glacier Bay and Tracy Arm.

So my take, HAL is the choice I would make, especially since some of those sailings out of Seattle go to Glacier Bay #1 choice and #2 choice- Hubbard. Tracy Arm is frequently iced out ending up with no viewing of the Twin Sawyers, and sometimes time is involved in how far they get in.

It's all what you like. Some prefer Holland America, others Princess, and others seem to like both. One thing to consider is size..Zaandam is 63,000 tons while the O-Dam and W-Dam are both 85,000. The Dawn and Sun are both 77,000. Size can make a difference.
While I can't say I've been on Princess, I can say that I've heard good things.
My trips to Alaska are both with Holland America= Statendam in 2003 out of Vancouver and the Oosterdam out of Seattle 2004. Both were great, but if I had to choose I would go with the Oosterdam and Seattle. Coming from the Eastern USA, flying in and out was much easier. Some say HAL is all old people = not true . In July 2004 at least there were plenty of young people and families.
Some say Hubbard Glacier is second rate compared to the 'must see" Glacier Bay . At least for me..they are equally worthwhile.
To be concise...just about any 7 day Alaska Cruise to Alaska is wonderful.
