Default Denali Options

Karen16, what are options in Denali other than the cruise line excursions. We will be on HAL in August and arrive Denali from Anchorage. We get a
drive tour...but I am not very excited about the ship's options. Are there
independent operators in Denali offering something more interesting? Friends were wondering about the shows...are they worthwhile or just the usual tourist offerings? Thanks for your replies...anyone!

The two largest operators of separate land tours in the state are Princess Tours and Westours.

>> Princess Tours is, of course, a subsidiary of Princess Cruises and thus operates the land tour portions of Princess cruise-tour packages, but also offers separate land tours. Princess Tours also owns the Princiess lodges in Alaska, which you also can book independently.

>> Westours is a subsidieary of Holland America Lines and thus operates the land tour portions of Holland America cruise-tours, but likewise also offers separate land tours. Westours also owns the Westmark chain of hotels in Alaska, which, again, you also can book indpeendently.

Carnival Corporation (NYSE: CCL) now controls both of these cruise lines, so either land tour unit may operate land tour portions of cruise-tours for any of that company's other lines.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltc. (NYSE: RCL) has established another major land tour unit named Royal Celebrity Tours, which operates land tour portions of cruise-tour packages for both of that compnay's cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International, over the past few years. I don't know whether Royal Celebrity Tours offers separate land tour packages or not.

Alaska Airlines offers tour packages to remote outposts like Kotzebue, Nome, and Barrow from either Anchorage or Fairbanks in conjunction with an Alaskan native corporation.

Finally, there's always the option of renting a car and making reservations at hotels on your own. The road from Anchorage to Fairbanks is pretty good, and it's a reasonable day's drive but you may want to plan overnight stops to allow time for sightseeing en route. You will be in "the good ol' you ess of aye," after all!

Norm.

Are you already on a cruisetour???? If so you should have included the Tundra Wilderness tour, ONLY ONE TO CONSIDER, you do not want the Natural History tour, a complete waste of time.

There are 2 "shows" both good. Cabin Night and one by Princess. Decent food. But there is plenty else to consider- the visitor center offers activities, sled dog demo is interesting. How long are you there? Flightseeing is probably going to be your only option to see McKinley and a top tour choice.
