In Vancouver, I recommend staying downtown.
If cost is a concern, the Crowne Plaza Georgia Hotel has a very reasonable rate for guests who pay in full at least three weeks in advance. It's situated between the Four Seasons and a Fairmont property, and surrounded by a neighborhood with great shopping and restaurants. Last July, I actually walked from the hotel to Canada Place, with my luggage ("roller back"), to embark aboard GTS Summit because it's only about four or five short blocks.
