Default Skagway - Train /Bus Combo questions

Hi

Will be doing Alaska on HAL Zuiderdam this July . I have been reading a lot of posts on the train/bus combo. I do not want to pay the cruiseline's prices and want to save a few bucks. I would like to take the train from Skagway to Whitehorse and the bus from Whitehorse to Skaway (or vice versa) But have a few questions -

1 - Where / how does one go about BOOKING a train / bus combo - any particular recommndations? From the WPYR official website, I could not understand if they even offer the " train from skagway to whitehorse and bus back to skagway" option at all

2 - Is the train from Skagway all the way to Whitehorse and the bus from whitehorse to Skagway (I saw a lot of combinations / permutations of mode of travel and destinations, either on the various websites or the cruiseline's shore ex pages, so am confused)

3 - Is it necessary to pre-book - I saw a lot of posts abt unpredictable weather and that there is no point in going on the train if the fog blocks your views...how does one deal with that - any other options?

ANY advice will be gratefully received!!

The White Pass RR does NOT go to Whitehorse, only goes to White Pass/Fraiser BC. I recommend you just get to Emerald Lake and return, Whitehorse is a long day trip with little interesting scenery past Emerald Lake.

Generally, if there is fog, it isn't for the entire White Pass Route, and no way to predict the weather. This tour has to be booked in advance.

These are shore excursions cobbled together by tour operators for the cruise lines, so you have to book them through the ship.

Actually, you can't book Chilkoot trips through the ship - only independently.

You CAN book independent as already stated above. They use smaller buses which is a benefit for interacting with the guide and less loading times.

Ladytravelbug,

We booked directly through Chilkoot Charters in Skagway. You can probably book it on their website or e-mail them at:
alaska-tours@hotmail.com.

I called them for information and they were extremely helpful. I think the cost was about $107 per person, including tax.

I did a little research on line and got information from many boards and thought this was a better way to go than the round trip train (no bus) that the cruise line offered.

Default Thanks!!

Everyone,

Thanks for all the helpful advice...It sounds like Chilkoot would be a good option to consider - cheap and more personalized ..
Am very excited abt the trip...
