We are big animal lovers. Is there any specific port that would have bears or seals or penguins available for viewing.
We are sailing on July 16th Sun Princess.
This is our very first cruise.
There are no penquins in Alaska. For wildlife you need tours, it isn't like the brochures, which are greatly enhanced. Necessary is a good pair of wide angle binoculars, at least 10 power.
In your timeframe, if bears are a priority, get to Anan out of Ketchikan, you are too early for Traitor's Cove or Neets Bay, these are cheaper tours, but even if offered (which they probably aren't) don't consider them due to timing. Look at going independent, since you usually have more viewing time and may be a little cheaper. www.islandwings.com and www.southeastaviation.com are my top 2 vender choices.
Whale watching tours out of Juneau have about !00% sightings of humpbacks. My top vender choice is www.orcaenterprises.com
It is possible to see whales from your cruise ship, but the views are distant and brief, and require a good deal of time invested at a front open deck. You are also best to know your areas. I spend all my time out on deck, have a great many wonderful marine wildlife viewings but you will always see me on the tours.
