I, too, have just picked up my Docs! I will be picking up the land part of my tour in Fairbanks on 7/23, then the Island Princess on 7/31 for the cruise. I have learned so much from these boards and I thank all of you. I have booked the Tundra Wilderness tour in Denali as well as Midnight Sun golfing and the Jeep Adventure. In Copper River we will be doing the Scenic Wilderness Rafting and while at the Kenai Princess will be taking a trip into Seward. We have Capt. Larry booked in Juneau, and Chilkoot Charter's Yukon bus/rail tour. Has anyone done the golfing or the Jeep Adventure? For those of you who have taken land or shore excursions in the past few years, what were you favorite ones? Which ones did not live up to your expectations? Again, many thanks. Carol :>)
Hands down for me are flights, with always doing at least 2-3 every trip. From the air is the only way to really see the vastness of Alaska. I have taken well over 100 Alaska tours and these continue to always be breathtaking.
As only my opinion, I never recommmend independent visitors booking the Tundra Wilderness tour, but always the shuttle to at least Fish Creek. Those extra 10 miles are significant for bear habitat and the shuttle 1/3 the cost.
It had to be the helicopter ride & landing out of Denali & the float plane out of ketchikan. Like Karen said - you cannot - simply cannot imagine the vastness until you are up there. If you are lucky to see whales from the air - you will see the whole animal. You see the ocean - the vastness of how it comes in & around the land, the amount of countless islands, waterfalls, lakes, the trees (the LACK of roads!!!! & people!!!) It is - would you say karen - "spell-bounding?"
