Default Alaska cell phone/roaming

Just a tidbit of info for those of you who have Alltel as a cell phone carrier. While at port in Alaska, if you have their FTR "Free to Roam" plan it will save $$. It saved us over $80 in roaming charges! Whoo Hoo!

We have Cingular Nationwide Plan, and we had reliable (free) service at every Alaska port of call except Icy Strait Point. Victoria offered the Rogers Cell Phone system, which would have involved a roaming/ international surcharge.

Default Cell Phone Roaming Alaska

I checked with my cell phone provider, Cingular, and was told to be careful in Alaska. If you are too close to Canadian Border you might be charged International rates. This person with Cingular stated the Canadian Towers are sometimes pointed in the direction of the lower 48 and will intercept your call. He said it has happened and people were charged for international calls and $$$$.

Well, almost everywhere in Alaska is close to the Canadian Border.
Especially Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. I questioned him about this and he stated it doesn't happen all the time but it has happened and unsuspecting people were charged large amounts for these call . Has anyone experienced this with cell phone use in Alaska?

All of our calls were out of Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchican. We had no problem with the Canadian towers. We were told by Alltel that if we used our phone in Canada, we would be charged a $3.oo per day Canadian Cell phone fee on top of the international roaming charges. We bought a $10.00 international phone card and used a land line just long enough to check in with people at home, to let them know we arrived safely.

While in port in Juneau we also made our calls from our balcony of the ship with no problem.

You should check with your provider directly to make sure Alaska is covered for your plan. We have nationwide coverage, however Alaska was not a part of it. That is why we signed up for the 100 minute free to roam for while we were gone.

Hope this helps

Your welcome.
By the way, for the calls from all three ports, the roaming service provider location was out of Anchorage. So when you see your bill and it lists where your calls came from they will say Anchorage, not Skagway, Juneau, or Ketchikan. I was kind of surprised at that part. But as long as it worked I am happy

Good luck with your provider.

Jane
