Where is the best bear viewing in mid July? I am thinking Brook Falls or Redoubt bay. And I was thinking of doing it pre cruise, thinking it will be cheaper that booking through the cruise line. :D
I haven't been yet, but am working on the same issue.
Check out this link, which was given to me.
I think that Katmai is the ultimate, but not really cheaper and it seems that it is not good in August & possibly late July.
Good luck & please post back if you find any great tips.
Brooks Falls was an incredible experience when I went there 9-9-06-9-11-06. I stayed in the campground which is MUCH cheaper for 2 nights and wish that I had stayed 3. Prime viewing times are July and the first 2 wks of September during the salmon run. You can email me privately if you have questions...email@example.com

Your pictures are awesome!
You saw the bears at Brook River Falls in Katmai National Park, what company did you book with?, I do not see anything for Brooks Lodge. Where did you fly out of?
It looks like you might have went Halibut fishing. If so where did you go out of and who did you go with? And would you recommend them? We are thinking of fishing out of Seward.
You have pictures of Zip lining. Where did you do this?
You took a boat trip to view glaciers, which one did you do? Kenai Fjords/Prince William Sound. Do you know which tour company you went with.
Did you cruise with Carnival? What trips would you recommend booking through the cruise line?
Did you explore Exit Glacier?
Mid July is also excellent for Anan, fly in out of Ketchikan.
Your pictures are awesome!
You saw the bears at Brook River Falls in Katmai National Park, what company did you book with?, http://www.katmailand.com/bear-viewing/index.html and http://www.penair.com/ http://www.katmailand.com/lodging/brooks.htmlI do not see anything for Brooks Lodge. Where did you fly out of? I flew from Anchorage to King Salmon on Penair for which I made my own reservations then Katmailand.com travel company for the float plane from King Salmon to Brooks Lodge. I saved $70 by doing it this way instead of having Katmailand company do all of it. Just make sure that you don't do a "day" trip to Brooks lodge. You must spend the night to have adequate time to see the bears. It is an incredible experience for photographers. If you have the money, stay in the lodge. I camped in the electric fenced- in campground which was cheap and lovely. The lodge allows campers to hang out there and purchase meals also so I only slept at the campground and ate my meals at the lodge.
It looks like you might have went Halibut fishing. If so where did you go out of and who did you go with? And would you recommend them? We are thinking of fishing out of Seward. In Seward we stayed in a rustic hut in the Miller's landing campground. Lots of people do fishing , hiking, kayaking, etc. from the area which is lovely. On Saturday nights the fishermen bring in the catch of the day, provide free barbqued halibut, and campers bring side dishes to share in the potluck. It was wonderful. We did not actually fish but Seward or Homer are the main "big fish" fishing areas. http://www.millerslandingak.com/
You have pictures of Zip lining. Where did you do this? http://www.traveljuneau.com/planner/...spotlight=true Juneau... incredible experience....gorgeous scenary. We made our own reservations at a travel shop near the ships dock. You took a boat trip to view glaciers, which one did you do? Kenai Fjords/Prince William Sound. Do you know which tour company you went with. In Seward we did the 6hr. RENOWN tours boat trip. We used a 2 for 1 coupon in the Alaska Toursaver book which saved us $129. http://www.toursaver.com/ It was a fabulous day and a highlight of our trip. We also did the 6 hr. trip out Whittier which was also wonderful. http://www.princewilliamsound.com/
Did you cruise with Carnival? What trips would you recommend booking through the cruise line? Princess Sapphire...wonderful ship. We're the independent type so didn't book anything through the cruise line.
Did you explore Exit Glacier? Yes, It is an easy walk to see the glacier right up close and not to be missed.I would appreciate any tips that you can give me. We are arriving on July 13, spending two nights in Anchorage, then driving to Seward and spending three nights. Then driving to Whittier and doing some kind of trip there before getting on the Carnival Spirit.
You'll spend a full day stopping along the way on the drive from Anchorage to Seward. It's beautiful. Be sure to stop at the wildlife refuge center, a hidden treasure IMHO. We also did a few short hikes along the way. Road mile post 106 has a path that leads up the hill about 5 minutes where Dall sheep are often found. Here is a great web site packed with information: http://www.alaska.org/driving/turnagain-arm-drive.htm Does your ship leave later in the evening? Most boat tours are from about 11-5pm in Whittier. I'd highly recommend the Seward boat trip as my first choice over the Whittier PWS trip although both are great and very similar. I'd probably skip the PWS trip in favor of more time exploring the Kenai Penninsula that day. After visiting Seward you might go to Girdwood on your way to Whittier and take the tram to the top of the mountain for a beautiful view, and hike the beautiful trail near the Aleyska resort. Whittier has absolutely nothing to see at the port except going on a boat tour or getting on to your ship. Are you dropping your car off there? Have a fun trip! It's a photographer's paradise. We were there 8-26 through 9-16-06, a fabulous time of year with Fall colors in Denali & Hatcher Pass in early September, no crowds, minimal rain, daytime temps in the 50's and absolutely NO MOSQUITOS. It was a trip of a life time.
