Default traveling with my dear 84 year old Dad

Hi
I am taking a cruise with my dear dad, my sister and her family this May to Alaska. Lucky me!!! What excursions should we try to plan? My sister's family are young at heart, and Dad is not as sure footed anymore.

What should we pack?
Are the pools open on the Sun Princess? Is it too cold to do?
Any suggestions for pre-cruise Hotel in Seattle?

Annie

Congratulations!

>> In Ketchikan, the excursion to Saxman Village would be an excellent choice.

>> In Juneau, you might want to consider the salmon bake or the Mount Roberts Tramway.

>> In Skagway, the ride to Summit on the White Pass & Yukon Route (WP&YR), a narrow gauge railroad, is an absolute "must." The scenery from the rail line is incredible!

Have a great cruise!

Norm.

Norm's suggestions sound like great options. White Pass Railroad is indeed wonderful as is Mt Roberts. Done both !
If your Dad can climb into a boat or bus, then that opens up plenty of other options as well. Can he climb into an airplane or helicopter? There are SO many excellent shore excursions that I cannot list them all. Perhaps you could go onto the cruiseline's website and view the available shore excursions. One can even book them ahead of time.
Pack layers of cloths. T-shirt under a sweatshirt or light jacket, for example. The weather is unpredictable so dress accordingly and be prepared for possible rain. On the glacier visit, I found a pair of long johns to be handy.

Our last cruise to Alaska was with my 85 and 86 year old parents. We had a great time. We rented a car in Skagway and drove up to Emerald Lake (Carcross, Yukon), took whale watch tour in Juneau, and went to the Red Dog Saloon where we had a wonderful cold beer! Did lots of fun things on our two week cruise from San Diego to Alaska. Have fun with your Dad!

I'm 70 and I can say the WHITE PASS RR is great for him and like mentioned, if he can step into a chopper take it to the MENDENHALL GLACIER. You'll have to read up on all the various tours and ONLY YOU can tell what he can do, how can we ?? Also most tours will list the kind of physical activity needed to take said tour.

Good Luck e CIAO,

Default Thanks for your suggestions

I like all your suggestions! I think he will be able to get around okay. I may be the one falling. I am a clutz! Especially on trips. lol

I had my Dad over the other day and we looked at some of the excursions that we could do. He is very interested in the salmon bake. I would like to go see some wildlife too!

Thanks again!

Annie

Good Morning,
We did all the excursions that Norm mentioned with my 83 year old dad and he enjoyed all of them. We also did the Lumberjack show in Ketchikan that he really liked also. My kids also enjoyed this show alot.

Have a great trip, we really enjoyed ours,

Kathy
