Default Cell Phone Coverage

Can anyone comment on the Cell Phone coverage while cruising from Vancouver to Whittier. We are on the Coral Princess in May 2007. Is it true that perhaps only can make calls while in ports-Kethikan, Juneau, Skagway? Our stops.

IIRC, American cell phones do work in all of the major ports of call. they might not work in some of the smaller, more remote, ports like Hoonah ("Icy Strait Point").

Some cruise ships also now have cellular antennas onboard, so North American cell phones work at sea. Unfortunately, such calls are billed at "international roaming" rates so they are very expensive.

Besides the main ports, I called from the Yukon to NYC with no problem (Cingular service). Now indeed, many ships have cell service from on board.

All major US carriers work well in the major port cities. Depending on your route, you'll get good coverage in SOME areas while you're cruising (ie: Icy Strait has great GSM and CDMA coverage until you pull in to Hoonah and are tucked behind the point.)

Don't rely on them for family communications, but if work dictates you'll have ample opportunity to check messages or phone home.
