what to do in Whittier before cruise leaves?

We are booked for the Pacific Princess July 2007. We are traveling with our two girls ages 11&14. We are renting a motorhome for 10 days before our cruise to do our own sightseeing of the Kenai and Denali. After we return our motorhome on the morning of our cruise departure, I thought we'd take the train from ANC to Whittier and check in for our cruise. The only problem is we then have all day to spend in Whittier. What could we do that would take up a few hours of time? I also need some ideas for our excurtions in the three ports we stop at: skagway, juneau and ketchikan, remember we have two girls with us. Thanks![/b]

Not much in Whittier, but the glacier boat tours are superb. IF you are using a toursaver, there is a coupon available. This will give you excellent extended close of views of several glacier, chance of wildlife. Both far superior viewing compared to your cruise ship.

As for your ports, you need to narrow down your interests, there are 100's of fantastic Alaska tours to consider, few that aren't worthwhile if you have the interest. Determine your budget- they can cost for some. Look over a shore excursion list and rank your top 5 perhaps, involve the girls.

does anyone know what time you have to check in for the cruise? once you check in do you have to stay on ship or can you leave and wander around town for awhile? i'm thinking of taking transportation from anchorage that gets into whittier about 5. thanks

I am never in a rush to get on a ship sailing out of Alaska. You do have to check in and be on board an hour before departure. And most certainly, yes, you can go on and off the ship as you wish.

A very good use of time in Whittier are the glacier boat tours, just spectacular and way superior to anything seen from your cruiseship.
