Default mosquitos

i will be in alaska in late june/early july.

i will be doing a cruise that includes ketchikan, juneau, and skagway followed by a land tour that does prudhoe bay, fairbanks, and denali... are all these destinations full of biting beasties or are there certain regions (southeast/cruise ports maybe?) where that will be less of a concern?

i hate the idea of covering myself with a ton of chemicals... i will keep some DEET for plan B, but what fabrics are best to keep mosquitos from biting through? does anyone know of any products that work that are more organic?

Hi megs!
Don't worry about them in Juneau, Ketchikan or Skagway unless you're doing some seriously woodsy hiking. We usually don't get the really warm/dry spells needed for a hatch until July/August anyway - at least here in SE.

I'll let someone else comment up north. Depending on the permafrost/mud/muskeg conditions mosquitoes can be quite bad, but it really depends on timing and if they've got a big hatch by the time you're there.

I used to use the deep-woods OFF or military surplus DEET, but I've not been in a truly "buggy" area in quite a while. Off Skintastic is a favorite on the boat. I just about always wear Jeans or Cargos and a t-shirt or polo with little trouble. If the bugs are being buggy, I only spray down the exposed skin areas.

On the usual cruise ports they should not be a problem. I was in the Anchorage area one August and experienced the worst mosquito infestation in my life. They were everywhere ! But as I said, lower Alaska was virtually mosquito free in late June.

Default Mosquito Repellent Clothing

I found some clothing online at exofficio.com which is treated to keep mosquitos away. They call the fabric "Buzz Off." I can always use it at home as well because we have our fair share of mosquitos and West Nile. I believe that you can wash the items about 20 times before the repellent properties are gone.

They had a bandana which looked great to me because I cannot stand to have the little monsters near my face.

Hi!

How about on Douglas Island in May? We are doing the zip line excursion in Juneau. Is that more woodsy? We will also be in Seward, Girdwood, Copper Center, Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, and Anchorage. May 16-June 3rd is the whole trip. 16-23 on cruise and rest independent travel.

Thanks!
