Has anyone taken the sea otter and wildlife quest excursion? Are there local vendors that are just as good and cost less? Are there any other things that are suggested for this port?

I have not taken that excursion, but you might want to check out the historic sites from Sitka's days as the Russian capital of Alaska, the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, the Russian folk dancers, and the Raptor Center if your time allows.

Norm.

We went out with Captain Davey on the little Esther G last year, for a 4-hour marine mammal & bird tour. It was amazing - so good we've chartered him for the entire day when we go back on the Amsterdam in July. http://www.puffinsandwhales.com/ is his site, and you can see my photos and comments about the trip at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/revi...006/page4.html

Independent is definately the way to go. This is a fantastic tour of varied wildlife.

Therese,
We have done both, and enjoyed both. If this is your first time in Sitka I would say go with the ship's tour. Allen Marine was the company that did the Sea Otter and Wildlife Quest when we went and they do a wonderful job.
