Default What time of year to go?

So, we've just about decided on a northbound Alaska trip from Vancouver to Seward and I'm after some advice please.

We could go either early June or late Aug/ early September and were wondering what the conditions would be like.

There isn't much difference in cost it's the outside weather conditions and scenery I'm interested in. In another topic a poster gave details of a website for Alaska cruise reviews but I could only find details and photos of a June cruise. There was snow on the mountains, whales, eagles, seals etc. all of which I'd love to see. Could we expect the same later in the year?

Thanks in advance

Andrio

The weather between early June and late August or early September typically is pretty similar. Fares might be somewhat lower in early September, when schools are back in session everywhere here in the States.

Early June does offer one significant advantage over late August or early September, though. Being closer to the summer solstice, early June has longer hours of daylight and thus more opportunity to view passing scenery and wildlife. The ports of call, and especially the city of Anchorage, are far enough north for the difference to be significant.

BTW, I do have one additional recommendation. If your cruise line offers it, book the "Grandview Rail Transfer" rather than the standard "motorcoach" transfer from Seward to Anchorage. The transfer takes about four hours, so you will be a lot more comfortable on a train with plenty of room to get up, stretch, and move around and full meal and beverage service than on crammed into a bus seat with no food or beverage service at all. This segment of the Alaska Railroad also offers some of the most spectacular vistas anywhere in areas that are not accessible by road.

Norm.

thanks for the information Norm.

Pricewise the later date is a little more expensive from the UK (about $400) as our schools are still on holiday.

So, decisions, decisions.....................

As you'll see from the historic weather stats at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/cruise-weather.html, June is actually very different from September (much drier). All my Alaska cruises have been in late May or early June for that reason.

Thanks for all the responses.

Can someone tell me about the wildlife we're likely to see in June and September. Also what about the general scenery e.g. snow on the mountains etc.

Thankyou

Andrio

We saw it all! From Humpbacks (both on excursion and from the ship numerous times) to jellyfish to bears, otters, bald eagles etc. We didn't miss a thing!

We started our cruise in Whittier with lots of beautiful snow capped mountains, floating chuncks of ice to calving iceburgs. AWESOME scenery!!!!

We will take this cruise again in a couple of years when the kids are a bit older. They were only 6 and 3 when we sailed but they still talk about things they did and saw all the time!

Our neighbors (along with an 11 yr old Dd and a 5 yr old Dd) and Dh's bro/sil will be taking this cruise within the next year and we can't WAIT to hear their stories!!!!

Opt for June (as we did). It was great, still got some snow on the mountain pass to the Yukon.
