Yes, I've been there. Had a private guide- friend of a vendor I use. It wil still be cold in April.

I stayed at the King Elder which was basic but fine- I do have low standards. I suggest you may want to pack up and bring with you a supply of food, if staying a while, (I never recommend the day trips, I stayed 4 days) otherwise budget in about triple food prices.

Hi Karen:

I'm thinking of boomeranging there on a free Alaska Airlines ticket enroute to a business seminar in San Diego. The objective would be to tag the Artic Circle and the Artic Sea. Might also tag the Grand Canyon on the same trip planned over an extended weekend. I'm the kind of traveler who does day trips to Maui from Texas to check out the fish.

Figured it would be cold with the ground frozen and walkable, not mushy. May just be there a short time, then back to Fairbanks for a 3 hour layover which my charts suggest may allow for a peek at the Northern Lights. I'm thinking thin silk thermals under thicker synthetic thermals with 2 layers over the chest area, a lined duster, baklava, cap and gloves. Foil under foam in waffle tread boots (or might I want slip on cleats?) Chemical heat packs in the pockets.

Usually carry my own food on a boomerang trip.

Given my busy schedule, I hate to waste a free weekend. 8)
