We did both. Our credit card company did the currency exchange for a small percent. I think when we used USD, he got a big tip because we weren't sure of the exchange rate at the time.

Not too long ago the USD and the CAN$ were matched.
I don't think its changed too much to matter. I'd be happy to pay in USD even if it meant a larger tip. I've always found BC to be very friendly and nice.

perfect - thank you!! i vaguely remember using US dollars in the cab in Montreal a couple years ago (HAL's canada cruise - highly recommend!) but wasn't sure....thanks again!
The last couple of times we sailed out of Vancouver on an Alaskan cruise, we took a cab - I think it was round $36-40Cdn.
This time we decided to take a Limo so I contacted a friend in Vancouver and he said to try LimoJet. No reservations are needed - you just walk out of the terminal at the airport, looked for the LimoJet sign and there was a stretch Limo waiting to take us to the Pan Pacific. I think the cost was $45.00Cdn + tip. I asked the driver if we could have someone pick us up at the ship when we returned and he said yes, and gave us the phone number to call, which we did as soon as the ship docked.
The person on the phone told us to just go to the terminal (there are signs that say Taxi/Limos and use the courtesy phone. We did this, but unfortunately did not ask for LimoJet.
Well, this gal arrives in an SUV and stupidly we did not ask her if she was LimoJet or the price.
What a shock we got when we got to the airport. She had the gall to charge us $80.00Cdn - of course she did not get a tip. I tried to argue with her about the price & told her we had only paid $45.00 for the trip from the airport to the hotel, but she kept giving us this long song and dance.
So, be careful. Always ask the price and if you call from the courtesy phone, make sure you ask for LimoJet. We've learned our lesson.
Just a word of warning. I think there are companies out there ripping off tourists so we should be aware of them.
It is about $20-25 fro the airport to downtown Vancouver/piers. The USD to CAD is about 1 to 1, has been for some time now. There is also a shuttle that runs downtown as well for about $15pp one way, but it has limited hours of operation. If you are concerned about exchange rate, there is always the option of changing some $$ at the airport. I always try to hang onto $20-40 CAD to have for my next trip back and then I know I have at least cab fare.

We were in Vancouver only about three weeks ago; and, it was a little over 30 dollars for the cab, which was paid by credit card. A lot of the Canadian cabs are now Hybrids - Prius's and Camry's.
