Default bug spray- what is effective?

We need to purchase some insect repellent since we dont use it here in colorado. Does it matter what the active ingredient is to be effective? What is your experience with what you have used??
THanks

In the North, the only thing that works is DEET - products such as Muskol or Deep Woods Off.

Unless you're heading off on an excursion into the forest, bugs are not a big problem on the coast. The interior is where the legends come from (and this year is bad in some areas!)
