Default King Crab

Ok...we will be taking our 2nd Alaska cruise in July of 2009...we have fished for salmon, halibut, but still yearn for those king crabs. I see there is an excursion with a dungeness crab dinner but want to know if anyone has been to a great king crab restaurant in any of the ports, or in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or anywhere in between. Or....do you know of a private excursion that has to do with the kings, particularly eating them
Thanks!
bonvoyage!

I think my hubby and I did the excusion you are talking about. You go out on a boat and pull some crab pots. The teach a lot about the crabs. However, those crabs are for research not dinner. Once you head back for a crab feed the crab was tasty and warm. I thought it was a great excusion. We did this excusion in Ketchikan, Alaska.

There is no sport fishery for king crab in Alaska, so unless you're a resident crabbing for "personal use", you'll have to buy it from a commercial source - either directly from a commercial boat, in a restaurant, grocery store, etc.

There's nothing (except the cost) stopping a tour operator from serving king crab for a meal as part of an excursion, but the crab would be frozen and from a commercial operation only.

There is one sport fishing charter boat in Juneau that offers crabbing for dungeness as an add-on to some of their other excursions. Seems (to me) like a neat idea to go set a few crab pots while you're whale watching or fishing for salmon!

Happy Alaska Travels.

Something I should add the crab feed was dungeness not King Crab.

Just returned!!! We had a wonderful splurge of King Crab in Ketchikan.
Decided we needed to have the real deal when in Alaska. Ate at a place called Steamer on the main street in Ketchikan accross from the ships.
Paid $85 for 3 lbs of King Crab, not cheap but tasted wonderful!!!
