Any suggestions on hotels in Fairbanks? We will arrive around noon and only have that afternoon before hopping the train to Denali early the next morning. Any suggestions on things to do for an afternoon in Fairbanks would also be helpful.
Thanks and bonvoyage!
I like to get away from the airport area since it is full of cruisetour people and buses...
I have only stayed at one hotel in Fairbanks. The Springhill Suites (by Mariott). It's located on 1st street right downtown and next to the river. It is quite nice and I like the location and the hotel is quite nice.
What to do:
The University of Alaska, Fairbanks has a great museum: The Museum of the North http://www.uaf.edu/museum/. Many cruisetours go there and it is perfect for half a day. Don't forget to walk around outside and get your picture next to the totem poles (opposited end of the building from the main entrance), they also have some pipeline pigs.
If you are into bird watching you can go to Creamers Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge on College Rd. http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/index...efuge.creamers They have a visitors center, nature trails, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office is right next door. Walking through the game office can be as interesting as the Waterfowl Refuge.
If you have a car you can visit the pipeline. Just drive north on 2 the Steese Hwy. There is a good spot to view the pipeline on your right. It's only 8-10 minutes from town.
