Yes, several times. Key, is to allow TIME. I suggest 3 days, so to have time for a fly in/visit of Kennicott/McCarthy. Then necessary in my opinion is another 2 days at Valdez. Many times, people just don't allow the time needed for this area and essentially marathon their way though missing most of it. IF you don't have the time, then perhaps, using what you have elsewhere would offer you much more.
Most people miss it but I think it is an incredible drive. It is rather normal from Fairbanks to Delta but there are some nice overlooks of the river. Things really get nice starting around Donnley Dome and south. The section north of Paxton is probably my favorite. In the shoulder season the road is rather quiet and you will see a lot of game so be ready to slam on the brakes.
