Default alaska excursions - expensive - flights and dog sledding, et

The excursions are finally coming out for my Alaska trip in May. I have been looking over the excursion list it seems like for months! I have had my heart set on the flight and glacier trek in Juneau and the dog sledding on a glacier in Skagway. So far the Juneau excursions are out and the trek is 450.00 per person. YIKES. I have saved and saved but its just so hard to put 900.00 out for the 2 of us for 2.5 hrs. The dog sledding in Juneau is 600.00 PER person! Thats 1200.00! YIKES double! If anyone has been on these excursions (and I want the dog sledding on a glacier, not land) can you please tell me if this price is worth it or should we settle for something a little less expensive. Thanks for all your advice!

Normally I would say "do it... you only live once" but for the price of those two excursions you could take another cruise or spend a week inland exploring.[/i]

We did the 3 glacier helicopter tour and were very very glad we did. Yes ,it is expensive, but we felt it was soooo much fun and an incredible experience!

If you feel you might be visiting Alaska again maybe you can wait and save longer to be able to do a helicopter tour next time.

Its true the money can cover several other vacation options.

I would also advise that even though the tour offers the dog sled, it may not happen. We had booked that very thing only to get an email a few weeks prior to sailing that there just isn't enough snow for them to run and/or the dogs are not ready.

I think I posted the news about the dogsled being canceled back before we sailed in September 08.

The glacier dog sledding is horribly expensive and worth every penny. It's an experience you will never forget. However, the dog camps don't get set up until late May, so may not be available to you anyway. They are also the most-canceled of all tours due to the mountain weather, so have a back-up plan.

We will be there the week of May 20th - so I guess its cutting it close. We have decided to definitely do the glacier trek - in juneau. Still debating on another expensive excursion (the dog sledding) out of Skagway. Waiting for their prices to come online also. Thanks for your comments and suggestions - I do appreciate them!

We did the dog sledding/helicopter glacier tour in Skagway in August and it was worth every penny. It was our favorite excursion. The glacier tour is magnificent and the sledding experience couldn't have been better. Don't know what it would be like in May. Since we weren't sure we would ever get back to Alaska we bit the bullet on the price and were glad we did.

Thanks for the tip! What did you do in Juneau? We are glacier treking and its costing us 1000.00 for the 2 of us. Should we bit the bullet in Skagway too?

In Skagway, I would suggest renting a car and just driving at least to Emerald lake and just take in all the beauty that is Alaska!

I'd love to - but my husband would never go for that ---- strange/new place - unfamiliar grounds - and he would much rather stick with around town on foot or excursion.........sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
