Default What to do in Ketchikan

We've got our plans made for the rest of the trip...Whale Watching in Juneau, Train & Bus to White Pass in Skagway, fishing in Sitka, BUT we want to know if there's something special we shouldn't miss in Ketchikan. Not many of the cruise ship tours ring our bell, and we're not into a flight tour that costs a bundle. Anything we should really consider...right now it looks like a walk through town will be it.

We have a photo gallery on Alaska.

Or there is always the free shuttle to Walmart seen at the link above.

IIRC, we did the crab fishing tour there.

On our last trip to Ketchikan, we took the city bus out to Totem Bight park. It made for a beautiful, peaceful and dirt-cheap day - you can see my photojournal of the day at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/reviews/2007/page5.html

The Deer Mountain hatchery and eagle center is also very good, and a fairly easy walk from the docks (you get up very close to eagles - http://www.youralaskacruise.com/revi...les-0351c.html )

We found the Duck tour to be fun.....we did have a 10 yr old with us. It wasn't too pricey, toured the town, and then drove into the bay. Corny but fun. And a self-guided walking tour is really easy in Ketchikan. Take the funicular and down the married mans trail. Cheap and easy.

This year we are renting a car and driving the 16 miles north of town and the 14 miles south of town. North - Ward Lake, Totem Bight, Potlatch Park, and Settler's Cove. South - Saxman Village, Herring Bay.
Last year we picked up a walking tour map at the visitors center and really had a good time seeing most of the sights. We really enjoyed the Totem Heritage Center.
We've done the flight to Misty Fjord and really enjoyed that too. I want to take the boat excursion to Misty Fjord some day.

I'm not sure if we did the same tour. But I did a crab feed and fishing tour. We pulled up crab pots and learned the differences bewteen males and females. Then we had a crab feed, all you can eat crab it was wonderful.

Nope. We went on the F/V Aleutian Ballad from Deadliest Catch fame.

They demonstrated how they place and pull the pots. They then toss fish into the water and watch the bald eagles swoop down!

We held the various crabs and had a simple boxed lunch afterward.

Karen16 responded to another of Walter1's posts promoting this website/booking agent. here's what she had to say:

"In my opinion, ANY booking agent is a poor choice for Alaska. It is FAR superior to just go direct to the vendor. This may be an option to see what may be available, but so is a cruiseline shore excursion list. I would never consider booking via this."

Thanks to everybody for their comments and suggestions. I love watching the Deadliest Catch, but somehow if it's not in the Bering Sea with lots of crashing waves and ice everywhere, it just wouldn't be the same. After looking at your comments, and lots of websites, I think we'll do the town walk to include the funicular, Married Man's Trail, the Eagle Santuary and maybe totem park. Maybe after we stop for a couple of beers there in town we might feel silly enough to try the Duck tour. I grew up in Washington State, so while I love crab, a crab feast doesn't excite me...and besides the food on the ship is pretty good, and it's "free"...and "free" IS our friend.
