Default Alaskan shore excursions

Has anyone had any experiences going on Alaskan shore excursions with local companies? We'd love to go on the Mystic Fjords excursion, but at $166 per person on the NCL Star, that's rather expensive.

In Alaska, we ONLY go with independents unless there's no choice (some excursions are only available through the ships). While independents aren't always cheaper, they're virtually always smaller groups guided by locals.

Could you give me some links to the independents? That would include Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Prince Rupert. The only one I saw for Mystic Fjords was $158.

At this point, the shore excursions are costing close to what the actual cruise costs!!

The port guides at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/alas...ise_ports.html list all of the independents, and in the lengthy photojournals posted at http://www.youralaskacruise.com/reviews/ you can see the many excursions we've done in the past 4 years. It's certainly very easy to spend more on excursions that you did on your cabin, but in Alaska that's the key to seeing "the real Alaska", away from the t-shirt and jewelry shops.

I agree. The Alaska excursions are very expensive.
We are doing a mixture of cruise ship and private excursions.
Be forwarned --- Yukon is right --- the private excursions are not necessarily cheaper in Alaska. As a matter of fact, I am paying $4/pp more for a private whale watch than what the cruise line charges but I figure it's worth it to not have to battle for railing space w/ a hundred other people and get a customized tour.

There are hundreds of tours to consider, and few that aren't worthwhile. Best is to look over a shore excursion list, and narrow down your interests. Then repost.

Are you looking at a boat tour of Misty Fiords??? Allen Marine does operate these tours, BUT most port times, do not offer independent options.
