Victoria, BC
First let me say I know it's not Alaska but I wasn't sure where to post.

What is a group of 13 going to do in Victoria from 6:00pm until 11:00pm?
Not much time, dinner @ some point I would assume. Other than that any ideas?

I'm on the Westerdam on may 31. I had the same dilemma. I've read really great things about the Butchart Gardens. Apparantly, they have amazing lights and it's a 55 acre garden.

We had a stop there late in the day like this on Star Princess and signed up for Orka whale watching....It was fantastic, its usually a hit or miss thing, but we saw tons of Orka's feeding. You may want to check into something like that. I was suprised they had an excursion so late, we got into port at 5PM...

thanks for the web site. lots of good ideas.

not real happy with only 5 hours and really not happy with it being the last night on the ship. we have a habit of spending the last night in the casino trying to win our money back  then a mad dash to the cabin to try and get everything packed and in the hall for the next morning.

this should be the worst of my problems!! 26 more sleeps!!

I loved the gardens, but that maybe a bit late in the day to see them. we did the "high tea" excursion to the gardens and I wish I would have done it on my own. Because the high tea part wasn't that good and I would have perferred to stay looking in the gardens. Here are the hours of the gardens for the website. It's not that far from port maybe 30 minutes.

actually, it's an evening only excursion on the HAL line. Butchart has an extensive light system installed in the garden.

In July and August they have a fireworks display as well.

I don't know if I would be that thrilled with a high tea also.

I totally forgot about the fireworks, we watched them from the ship, very cool to say the least.

This is what we usually do in such circumstances:

We are very fond of the restaurant "Matisse." This restaurant is fabulous in every way. It is easy to fit in a great dinner at the end of a wonderful cruise. By then you are really ready for some excellent to outstanding food. (eventhough cruise ship food can be reasonably good at times.)

Check out their website. you won't be sorry, I promise!

Butchart Gardens is an excellent choice, with the interest.

With whale watching, you do need to consider, that the ship contracted tours are shorter than the regular length. Which means- the orcas have to be within closer range, and on average, have less sightings, figure 65-75% of the trips. This is average, and no way to predict.

When I go to Victoria, I always book at least 2 orca trips to hedge my bets. The operator will also KNOW before you leave what you will see, but don't count on them telling you, it's too late to cancel anyway. But I find out, for added bookings and don't hesistate for sucessive trips, especially when the 3 pods come together.

Read up on the southern Resident orca pods, JKL, for better understanding.

I put up some pictures of Victoria and Butchart gardens. My hubby took these pictures.
This is one of my favorite pictures. He really takes great pictures.

He made a calendar with his photos in 2007 and 2008. I was so disappointed :( not to get a 2009 calendar, he got some great shots of Italy and the Grand Canyon.
