considering renting a car for our stop in ketchikan. anyone have any thoughts on what not to miss.
One very interesting place to go in Ketchikan is the Totem exhibit. It is a short drive from the pier. If you don't rent a car in Ketchikan there is also an excellent mass transit system that circles the town and costs some where around $2.00. It is also a great way to rest when you are tired of walking around town. One of the bus stops is just past the tunnel next to the cruise ship pier.
If you are also going to stop in Skagway, in my opinion, renting a car and driving to Emerald Lake is just one of the most fantastic drives you will ever take.
Hope some of this helps and enjoy your cruise.
With integrity nothing else matters; without it nothing else matters.
this is our 2nd time to ketchikan so we've seen the town really. hoping someone out there can give us some ideas as to area lakes etc that we can drive to. our time is limited, 1/2 day port, so thought a car might be the best option.
The above is likely referring to Saxman Village??? In my opinion, this is a better option with a guided tour. You get little out of it without the commentary. IF looking at totems is your interest, then there are plenty right within walking distance in town. Saxman is 2 miles south.
The other nice totem area is Totem Bight, 10 miles north of downtown, and gotten to via the blue bus, $1 each way. The closest dock stop is NOT PAST the tunnel. It is BEFORE it, across from the eagle totem. Print out and BRING with you the totem guide from the state web site.
IF you get a car rental, not sure if the above poster has??? But I like driving the Ward Lake area, and Perserverence Trail hiking.
I will speculate you probably have not "seen" the entire town??? There certainly is plenty to see and do, depending on interests, that wouldn't repeat your last visit.
