We are first time Alaskan cruisers and were wondering if these attractions were within walking distance from our ship? Should we just go on our own or book through Princess?

There's one additional consideration here. Ketchikan is in the middle of a temperate rain forest. It's the wettest city in North America, with an average of over 260 days of rain per year. On a rainy day, you might well appreciate the tour's enclosed transportation between venues.
Was just there a few days ago. A very very short walk to the Lumberjack show from where our boat was parked. We paid the same at the agte as on the ship but due to the rain I did not want to book until I was sure I would stay high and dry. Good show, we both enjoyed it.
The lumberjack show is steps away if your ship is parked at berth 1 or 2. If you're parked at berths 3 or 4, it's about 1/2 mile or so. You don't really need to book it through the cruise line unless you want to guarantee your spot. But there are several show times throughout the day, so if I were you, I'd just walk down there and book it yourself. While you're waiting for your showtime, browse the shops nearby. There's plenty to see in that area!
As for the totems, you'll have to get on a bus to see those. It's about 5 miles south of town.
