The glacier excursions are so pricey....we want to do one, but not sure whether to do one that you can actually walk on a glacier or just do the fly-over? Would like some comments on this? What companies did you go with?

Yes the cost is high. You have to look at all there is to do in the ports you stop at and decide what would give you the most bang or that is of most interest.
We landed on one glacier and flew over a few others.
If you do go with a tour be sure to read the T&C closely and have the emails/receipts with you on the cruise. We had to call 24 hrs in advance to confirm which meant calling from one port before the tour port.

We did the Taku Lodge floatplane trip and loved it. We flew over several glaciers and landed at the lodge right in front of one of Alaska's few ascending glaciers. They fed us a wonderful meal and we got to walk the trails in the rainforest. It was unworldly looking, like something from a movie. The black bears are also plentiful at the lodge.
The owners and the staff were fantastic. One of our best experiences while in Alaska. Taking off and landing on the water is just way cool too!
I took the glacier fly over and landing while in Juneau. I think the company was ERA. You are right that it is very pricey, but IMHO it was the flight of a lifetime and worth every penny that it cost.
Enjoy Alaska.

I have done all the above listed flying, plus more.
I prefer glacier helicopter landings, there is a treking company that has even more time on the ice. There are plenty of flights to choose from and all will offer you a great trip.
Determine your budget, and then see what fits the best.
it took everything I had to click that button and reserve the extended glacier trek in Juneau for 600.00 pp. EVERYTHING I HAD! But, after doing it, I would click that button without hesitation! OMG - it was so frickin awesome! You just have to do it - you will NOT regret it!!!!!
