Alaska railroad

My husband and I are seriously considering taking the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Seward. I am somewhat confused about purchasing the basic fare or the gold fare (not sure that's what they called it). Would someone who has done this give me some advice? What is the difference?

I'm happy with the regular service, and move around to the dome car, of the regular passengers when I wish.
