I'm scheduled for an Alaskan cruise on HAL Oosterdam in 06/2010. HAL's express docs describe evening wear on non-formal nights as "smart casual." I've cruised before in warmer climates and have worn pants with button-down Tommy Bahamas silk shirts on such nights. Would that be appropriate for an Alaskan cruise...in terms of weather, do they keep those dining halls on the warm side? If not, what's more typical/mainstream for smart casual? Thanks in advance for your responses.

The ship cpuld be a little on the cool side in Alaska. In terms of what to wear, although Tropical shirts are not very "Alaska" they are perfectly acceptable if that is what you want to wear.

Inside the ship will be much the same as ever I suspect...never done Alaska but we have been up to Norway, smart casual is usually just a smart shirt & long trousers, proper shoes.

What's a "smart" shirt?

Sorry ...a more formal "proper" shirt not a teeshirt, one with sleeves & a collar, the sort you could wear a tie with if you wished. People also wear "polo" type shirts.

We were on HAL last year in Alaska, saw it all in the dining room. Jeans, Track suits on men, smart casual... from one extreme to another. Just look smart.

Yes...it's the "smart" bit of smart casual that seems to be the problem!

That would be perfectly fine, even in Alaska...The temps inside are usually very comfortable, you should be fine.

Basically, "smart casual" means that gents wear shirts with collars (and sleeves), slacks or khakis, socks, and shoes. Sweaters or sport coats and neckties are optional.

I find that "polo" shirts or "golf" shirts are the most practical option, as they are dressy enough to wear in the evening but still casual enough to wear in the daytime. There's no need to bring more shirts than necessary.

What about pants? I know that jeans are frowned upon in the DR and most people think cords are a step up but what about cords that are styled/cut just like jeans?

I wouldn't hesitate to wear cords in the dining room in Alaska.

Cords would be fine and any kind of "docker" type pants works just as well, pack and wear nicely.

I was on a HAL cruise to Alaska in 2008 .On the ship I wore knit shirts and khakis and off the ship tee shirts and jeans .I only wore dress shirts on formal nights .

If you dig dirt in the Garden with those pants and have sandles then that is not what is meant.
Cruise ships are cool in the dining room most of the time so if you are like me, most of my attire in shirts have long sleeves.
In the tropics I'd wear short sleeves though when a breeze hits at night I've been known to wear a light sweater.
Unless I'm going to a Formal night or a Wedding or a Funeral or even an interview though I'm retired now,my tie stays in the drawer.
Some times if I'm not wearing a smart sport shirt but more of dress shirt I'll add the tie to dinner.
Pants wise, most of the time, no jeans as in riding horses but dress pants or casual docker type pants with shoes. For my friend 'Johnthed0g'

I do have cords that have creases in them and do not look like my hippy days of love and dreams. One cannot tell and in fact they look smarter than some of

my smart casual pants.
